View Full Version : No IDE Master H.D.D Detected!

I'm not sure if anyone here will be able to help me with this, but we've basically built a new computer with both new parts and parts from an existing build. The case (obviously), motherboard, graphics card and PSU are all new - everything else came from our old machine.

Unfortunately, the new motherboard has only one IDE port.. This means that we can only run one hard drive and one optical device. We have it set up so that the Hard Drive is on Device 1, and the DVD-RW Drive is on Device 0 (the cable doesn't reach the other way around). I've played around with the jumpers, and both are currently on "Cable Select" - yet I still get this error message when booting up the computer (even if the H.D.D is set to "Master").

Also when loading up, it says "Press <Del> to enter setup." - so I press Del, and it just freezes with the AMI logo. I've tried resetting the CMOS and I still get the same problem. We're having to run the computer on just 256mb of RAM at the moment because the speed of the 512mb stick is too slow for the motherboard.. :dozey:

disconnect all IDE devices and run setup... make sure all your BIOS settings are at default
make sure you set the HD to master and connect it as 0 then boot... dont connect any other IDE's till you get a boot from the HD, if the HD wont boot with the config Ive described then your board isnt set properly or there is a fault with it.

The hard drive still boots, but it prompts me every time I start it to "Press F1 to resume".

I'll see if I can get in to the BIOS with the setup that you suggested..

You mean the storage size? 80GB..

hhmmmm 80gig shouldnt be an issue... its when you get over that size that some mobo's need a bios upgrade or some tweaking in windows.

All sorted.. :)

I had only the HDD plugged in, which for some reason allowed me to get in to the BIOS. I changed a couple of settings, plugged my DVD-RW back in and set the HDD to Master and the DVD-RW to Slave - and voila!

Now if only I could get my front sound ports working..

LMAO!!! I just have to comment on that, i have been reading this thread. If it isnt one thing it is another!! However i am sure the RAM problem can be easily fixed with a purchase!!! Heres to hoping that you get what you need!!!:grin

1 post to get free tech advice....

set the hd to auto-detect in bios. If putting 2 hd's on same cable put one as master & one as slave. U need to change jumper setting on hd, usually on top of hd it will say what pins are master & which are slave

set jumper cables at back of hd to master & put 1st on ide
cable.

ps if u have dvd set 2 master at end of cable, if u then add hd to middle it needs to be set to slave
